The Australian Startup Awards 2014 – The Winners

The winners of the Australian Startup Awards 2014 have been announced at the annual black tie awards evening at the Hilton Hotel Sydney.

The Awards, presented by The Entourage, are in their second year and have recognised outstanding entrepreneurs and businesses in six categories:

Spotify Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Startup Daily Startup of the Year
MYOB Online Business of the Year
DKM Blue Service Business of the Year
Hilton Product Business of the Year
Zambrero Young Business of the Year

Founder of the Entourage, Jack Delosa, said, “This year the judges were looking for a combination of strong financial performance, a disruptive business model and potential for future growth. These winners have each of these qualities and it will be very exciting to watch their continued success in the years to come.”

The winners are:

Spotify Young Entrepreneur of the Year – Justin Dry, Vinomofo

This award recognises an entrepreneur under 40 who has built a successful business in a remarkable way.

“With Vinomofo, Justin Dry epitomises the entrepreneurs journey. From holding off pressure from major retailers and distributors, to selling a stake in the business to Catch of the Day before ultimately engineering a buy-back, and today having an email membership base of 260,000, and throughout it all, Vinomofo has delivered elegantly strong financial results year on year.”

MYOB Online Business of the Year – Justin Dry, Vinomofo

This award recognises a remarkable online business that has demonstrated strong growth and web presence.

“Vinomofo have disrupted the traditional supply chain and defied the major retailers and distributors in the wine industry. By being competitive on price and utilising the advantages that come with an online business model, Vinomofo have quickly grown to a $15 million revenue and a membership base of 260,000 wine lovers.”

Startup Daily Startup of the Year – Jane Lu, ShowPo

This award recognises a business that is less than four years young and has experienced significant financial growth.

“A returning winner from 2013, Jane Lu has continued to drive ShowPo as a major disruptor in online fashion. Now a market leader and expanding into television commercials, ShowPo boast a huge online following with a volume of up to 1,000 orders per day, a Facebook following of 400,000 and continued exceptional financial growth. Definitely one to watch in the coming 5 years.”

DKM Blue Service Business of the Year – Aaron Smith, KX Pilates

This award recognises a stand-out services based business that has demonstrated strong financial growth, and demonstrates significant growth potential.

“Through KX Pilates, Aaron Smith has branded his own new style of high performance pilates. Starting in 2010 with no business experience and $20,000 in debt, KX Pilates have now grown to 11 studios and are making waves in the health and fitness movement.”

Hilton Product Business of the Year – Phil Preston & Duncan Amos, Red Robot

This award recognises an exceptional products based business that has demonstrated strong financial growth, and demonstrates significant growth potential.

“Red Robot operates and sells Photo Booths for special occasions, they were the first to manufacture commercially in Australia and are now the largest Photo Booth supplier with more than double the amount of customers than their nearest competitors.”

Zambrero Young Executive of the Year – David Rohrsheim, Uber

This award recognises exceptional performance of someone in a CEO or senior management position of a company, who is not necessarily the founder or co-founder.

“David is the classic exec story of someone who went to the Valley in San Francisco, met with Travis the CEO of Uber and had a two hour conversation about David bringing Uber to Australia, that ended with Travis saying “let’s do it.” David then brought the model back to Sydney and launched Uber in their third international city behind Paris and London. Needless to say the play has been hugely successful with the brand gaining great traction.”
