1: Look at goals through the lens of principles.
Goals should always be looked at through the lens of principles and rituals. Often when we try and make rapid change in our life or business we can set ourselves up for failure as we are attempting to tell ourselves that life is black and white and we must have a start and stop mentality. The question we all should be asking more often is “Who do I want or need to be everyday to leave the legacy on this earth I was created to leave,” not ” What do I want to obtain to benefit myself”. When we figure out what principles we want to live our life by and what rituals need to be followed to ensure those principles turn into reality that’s when we will discover true purpose and achieve everything we desire in 2017 and beyond.
2: Set purposeful goals.
Your goals needs to mean actually something to you. If they don’t then they are just goals with no purpose. Ensuring each goal you set is meaningful will make you more likely to achieve them.
When you start actioning your goals the key thing is to just START. The first step is always the hardest, but once you have taken the first step in the right direction, every step after gets a little easier.
3: Understand what’s holding you back.
Before you start working on accomplishing your goals, reflect on what has held you back from achieving goals in the past. You need to be true and honest with yourself here. Write down the factors that have been limiting you in a journal or talk about them with friends and family. If you can understand what might prevent you from accomplishing your goals, you can set strategies in place to work past these barriers.
4: Chunk big goals into smaller steps.
Often we don’t reach goals because we get overwhelmed by how big they look. By chunking them down into smaller steps our goals become more manageable and we can gradually work towards achieving them.
To do this think about your goals and write down the actions you need to do on a monthly and weekly basis to achieve them. Then each week you can complete certain tasks and projects linked to this goal. Focus
5: Develop good habits. FAST.
Maintaining good habits on a day-to-day basis affects our ability to accomplish bigger goals. Think about the actions you need to take to reach a goal, and ritualise these actions.
For example, if your goal is to get fit, you need to drag yourself out of bed 10 days in a row to exercise. Once you have done this repeatedly for 10 days, what once seemed like a chore, will soon become a habit.
6: Find an accountability buddy.
One of the factors that prevents us from accomplishing goals is a lack of accountability. Find someone, other than yourself, who is aware of your goals and will push you to achieve them. This person needs to be someone you trust to hold you accountable to your best self, and pull you up when you’re not achieving.
7: Link small goals to higher level goals.
Set small goals that are intrinsically linked to your higher level goals. Break these down into principles that can easily be applied for everyday life and lead to your success. For example if your grand goal is that you want to be the fittest that you’ve ever been, the overarching principle is your dedication to your health. To apply this principle to your life you might decide that you need to exercise every day.
8: Think SMART.
Ensure each goal you set fits into the SMART goal framework. This is a proven and affective way to setting goals that you will actually be able to achieve.
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time Based
9: Set a timeframe for each goal.
Make sure your goals are as specific as possible. Set a date you want to achieve each goal by and share it with several people who you trust. This will mean you have people there to hold you accountable.
10: Use the ‘Fat 5’ theory.
Think about the ‘fattest 5’ things you can do that will have the flow on effect to of making your goals more achievable. For example if you’re a business owner and your goal is to make an extra $10k in sales next month then the ‘fat’ things you could do to help you achieve this would be: make 10 extra sales calls every week, focus on learning new conversion strategies, develop a strong sales pipeline and track progress.
Essentially the ‘Fat 5’ should be the tasks and projects you need to do consistently to bring you closer to achieving your goals
11: Be Proactive.
Ultimately the only person who can achieve your goals is you. Rather than reacting to situations that happen to you, you need to get out there and put the strategies and steps in place to ensure you are moving towards the purpose you hold for yourself. Use visualisation and meditation techniques to help them stay focused on your big picture goals.
12: Think of one overarching goal.
Rather than writing endless ‘To Do’ lists of goals and ambitions, try and think of one overarching or key goal that you want to achieve in 2017. By keeping things simple and staying focused you will be more likely to achieve big in 2017.
