10 lessons in building a 100K fan page

I am going to cut straight to the point here and show you exactly how we built one of our Facebook fan pages to over 100k fans, without spending any money. No filler, just killer. I know you’re busy and I know what you want, more fans. So lets get to it.

Having built several 100k+ fan pages, here is what I have learnt. This is how we built our fan page Clean Eating to over 100k fans in 12 months, without spending any money. Our core market was originally in the health and fitness space. But we noticed that our customers and fans were wanting more than just fitness.

Lesson 1: What else does your customers want or need? It doesn’t have to be in the exact same industry either. At the time (still is) clean eating was becoming very popular. So one night I decided to create a page called ‘Clean Eating Recipes’. The page name tells the person exactly what it is and what to expect.

Lesson 3: We posted 6 posts on the page before we did anything. In our case it was recipes because that’s what the page is about. Be sure to post relevant content to your chosen topic. No cat videos, unless your page is about cats, then in that case it is purrrrfect.

People don’t like to arrive at a party and see only one person standing in the corner. Don’t hold your page ransom by only posting one post. Once people like one post, many will actually go to the page and see what else you have on offer. In this case it is more of what they originally liked.

Lesson 4: Create a viral, shareable piece of content. We simply offered to give away 1 of 5 copies of our Clean Eating Recipe books. If you do not have a tangible product, get creative. What else could you give away? Just make sure it is relevant to your page. i.e: Don’t give away an iPad of iPhone, because you will attract the wrong fans (only your ego cares about the number of fans, focus on quality first and foremost).

Lesson 5: Invite all of your Facebook profile friends to like your page (don’t forget about the people who already follow you). Too many people focus on getting new friends or fans, they forget about the ones they already have. 

Post consistently once your page is live. Aim for at least 4 posts daily. Why 4 posts you ask? The majority of your fans will be lucky to see 1 of your posts throughout the day. So we need to be regular and consistent. This will help build engagement over time.


Lesson 6: Collaborate between your other pages. Every 6-9 posts, share a piece of content from one of your other pages. In this case, we might share a workout from my wife’s health and fitness page or something motivational from my page. Why seek for referral based partners, when you can be your own? 

Lesson 7: To turn your fans into customers, create viral and sharable pieces of content. We post this at least once per month. This is the exact post we use, it’s become so popular that I now see other “Facebook Gurus” using my actual post and example in their own workshops.

Lesson 8: Engagement. It is no accident that post has been shared over 930 times. If you want to unlock the deeper secrets, comment below and I will be sure to help you (I just did it again).

Lesson 9: Turn your fans into customers. Once you see a post create traction, post your link to your Opt-in page in the comments section. As you can see in the below image, this post has had a lot of interaction. Why? Because we actually asked a question and enticed engagement.

Lesson 10: Use images that are eye catching, crisp and evoke emotion. Like chocolate ice cream? How about a healthy version?
